On Sunday night, I asked Mike Murphy, a spokesman for the New York State Senate Democrats, what the leadership thought of a certain bill proposed by a Westchester assemblywoman named Amy Paulin. Paulin, who has been in the body more than 20 years, pitched a rather straightforward idea: change the election law so Brian Benjamin, the lieutenant governor who was arrested and has subsequently resigned, could be removed from the ballot.
Murphy’s answer was very quick and quite clear.
