I don't really recall the great substack panic, but it seems fine to me. And with the notes function on top of it, I think it's a contender for best platform. I'm still not that deep into it, but I like it so far. I'm not positive, but Notes might be a good replacement for twitter.

"Masks could help stop the spread of Covid."

I suppose it's true they *could* help stop the spread of Covid. That's if people were capable of wearing high-quality masks (KN95 or better) properly at all times. In reality, there is no evidence that community masking worked to stop the spread of Covid. Around the world, we saw that there was no discernible difference in covid rates in communities with high rates of masking vs. communities with low rates of masking.

There is more evidence that wearing high-quality masks helps at the individual level, but even then, the best they can do is delay the inevitable.

Your characterization of Berenson is strange. Berenson said the vaccines were ineffective. He got there before anyone else in the press (he analyzed the data) and they crucified and censored him for it. Now that we have known for a while that the vaccine does not block transmission, Berenson has been justified. If he's misinformation merchant, what do we call Fauci, Rachel Maddow, and many other Corporate Press members, who both said that if you get the covid vaccine, you won't get Covid, ever, full stop?

I, too, hope to be a subscriber in 10 years, reading your work. While I'm not a liberal or progressive, your NYC columns are fantastic, and I never get the sense that you're lying of pushing The Narrative. These days, that's a rare thing.

Sometimes I pay too much attention to dumb internet controversies and worry that I've become a conservative but you seem to agree with me about the controversies so I guess either I'm still fine or you are a conservative too

Ross isn't conservative, he's just not lost in internet group think, which is almost a prerequisite to do media on the left or right in the 2020s. Certainly helps he started in real local media, not "digital media".

I know he isn't, I'm just amused and encouraged that he's on the "right-wing" side of these dumb disputes (and not-so-dumb ones, like "did Bernie have broader appeal than AOC just because he is white"?), it makes me feel like less of a crank

One thing that is very heartening about Substack is that high quality writers (ok, writers I like) attract wide audiences, get paid, and can afford to produce a lot of content. Having multiple daily sources of quality opinion writing that is easily accessible is a great outcome for readers.

I discovered what you call "the great Substack Panic of the early 2020s" only AFTER being practically FORCED to come to start a Substack Newsletter, and it worried me enough to write this: https://mfioretti.substack.com/p/substack-notes-chris-best-and-now

It's great to read that that "panic" may have passed. I really hope so. Thanks.
