"If you're sick of political polarization, save local news." Yes, I'm with you! "And the solution is to fund local news with federal cash." Woops, you lost me.

I want local news that questions how federal policy impacts my community.

A subsidy won't stop that from happening. Many other countries around the world offer direct aid and subsidies to local news and these outlets don't print press releases for the central government. They do real accountability journalism

My experience has been that funding sources heavily influence activity. Follow the dollar and all that. Journalism is no different.

I'm inclined to agree with Burrito here.

Can you give a couple of examples of governmentally subsidized media outlets that have meaningfully but the hand that fed them?

Sorry - BIT the hand that fed them, I meant to say.

"It would be simplistic to say all of print and online media has a liberal bias."

Especially because the mass media has an authoritarian bias - pro-business, pro-war, anti-union, and elitist.

They covered for Bush an illegal domestic surveillance. They lauded Bill Clinton for working with Republicans to offshore our manufacturing base. Bill Kristol and David Drum are resistance heroes now. Remember all the adorable stories of Michelle Obama and George Bush sharing candy?

They don't hate Trump because Trump is a gross imbecile - they hate him because he isn't one of the ruling class.

Remember (or perhaps realize for the first time) that anyone who uses "populist" as an epithet fears and hates anyone who isn't part of the ruling class.

And then the houseplant IQ WBush did it again, and the Woke Press fawned over it and slobbered for the second time.

Bush and Obama - new wars in the ME and the destruction of Libya into an open air slave market get that style of coverage - Trump got the Russia hoax (and still does), and the pee tape foolery, and Putin! going to shut off Vermont’s electricity.

You don’t have to be a Trump supporter to see what’s going on. I don’t see Mr. Barkan’s points here as viable or effective. Woke Media is way too far gone, which is why people like me have no problem watching it implode.

The only consideration I have is does the Democratic Party need to be destroyed to be saved.

I think many people across the ideological spectrum would like to see a revival of hyperlocal news coverage of the sort these small publications used to provide. Are there issues with the federal government paying for it? Perhaps, perhaps not. If we're talking about the sort of medium-size publication that would once have made an endorsement in say the Akron mayoral race . . .well, now we are in choppier waters.

But I don't think that pertains much to the issue of the ideological bias we see in national news coverage.

Also local stations, at least in my local, have been MSM shills for years. I know about the whole Sinclair media thing but KSBW8 which is supposedly "local" is basically just watered down CNN. They disable comments on their YouTube feeds and censor any opposition on their website comments section. Then proceed to post garbage like "local board of supervisors calls for Israel ceasefire" talking about a 9000 pop town in central California. The only response I can think of is "shut the f&c& up with your nonsense."

I agreed with most of your article until you stated this...

"PBS is already subsidized by the federal government and doesn’t transform into a propaganda organ for whichever president is in power."

PBS should change its acronym meaning to "publicly broadcasting socialism" or NPR " Nazi propaganda radio." They play the most elitist, liberal garbage there is. They have pushed for everything that is wrong with America. They are pro- immigration (illegal), pro vaccine mandate, pro mask, pro pedos teaching your kids, pro porn in school, pro BLM, pro Biden.

I personally hope every new organization goes down in flames. Respected Independent journalism should be a career people can make a living with.

You're one of those people who can't tell the difference between socialism and fascism, aren't you?

Expand full comment

What is the definition of each with examples please?

Expand full comment

How bout you enlighten me

Expand full comment

And there was fascism in Nazi Germany, look at VW and HUGO BOSS, but it was left wing fascism.

Expand full comment

And to answer my questions to him.

Fascism should be neither left or right wing, however, woke dictionary companies have chosen to add right wing to the definition. The main definition is; government influence via corporate policy. So when Joe Biden tells Twitter not to post stories or allow sharing of New York post stories, that is fascism. When Sutter health forces you to get a clot shot because the federal government has said you have to, that is fascism.

The Nazi party was the Nazi SOCIALIST Party

The Nazi party and Hitler were left wing authoritarian nationalists.

Expand full comment

And would you say PBS/NPR is right leaning or left leaning?

Expand full comment

And was Hitler right wing or left wing?

Expand full comment

Just answer this question for me. Was Hitler fascist? And what exactly was the official name for the Nazi party?

How bout you just look it up

Because retards like you want to try and act intelligent, yet your entire argument falls apart when you are confronted with facts and definitions. So I am just giving you the opportunity to shut up and go away before you make yourself looked even dumber than you already do.

"For those who are actually sick of the political polarization in America and don’t want to see the media universe cleaved wholly between people who watch Fox News and people who watch CNN/MSNBC..."

Count me in that category. I am burnt the fuck out by all of it.

You're right to mourn the loss of local news. It's a huge problem. I however don't think your suggested solution will work. See the comments of others here for the reasons. Instead I wish to discuss an alternative solution.

For the past two years I have been acting as a one-man volunteer reporter for my small town - a town that is otherwise nearly devoid of journalistic attention. It's at Nottingham.substack.com. Substack makes publishing easy. All I have to do is write.

My readership stats say there's a huge demand for this kind of reporting. It's probably not demand that would create an economically viable business, but some people might wish to get into it as a hobby business if there were some money to be made, perhaps through a combination of grants, prizes, advertising, and subscriptions.
