The problem is the assumption that anyone likely to read you is a member of the Comfortable Class with ample disposable income, as opposed to those like me who are elderly retired journalists on Social Security trying to keep the public informed by running a group on MeWe that passes on links to stuff they need to know. 🙃 That's not a plea for special treatment (although a senior-discount/student/poor people stream would be nice), just one to keep the primary coverage publicly available.
I prefer to pay if I can, but Substack needs to consider adding a "senior/student discount" track of, say $15/year. I can shuffle expenses enough to subscribe to more of the people I follow—three for every one I currently have a paid subscription for. That would be four getting a few bucks who aren't getting anything now, so seems workable. Will there be cheaters? Maybe, but there are ways to curb that without being unnecessarily intrusive, and I suspect it wouldn't be all that much of a problem anyway.
"But if you can afford $50 a year or $5 month—the annual rate is barely one meal in Manhattan—you really should subscribe.
It’s the right thing to do."
I've enjoyed this blog and you're right, one blog isn't much. But they add up fast. I've prioritized liberals who are sticking their necks out to challenge woke nonsense. That is what I can't find elsewhere, and find on Substack. You've done that in some cases. In others, I've been a bit disappointed. However, I understand you are a white man of the left in NYC moving in various circles and that is a treacherous proposition for you. I will continue to read what is available and re-evaluate subscribing periodically.
I paid because this is information our community needs and we need to support it and you! Our NYC local papers are pushed into business models that makes them focus on word games, recipe apps and celebrity fashion drops - you're giving us the perspective we need.
