The left didn't even give them their own letter in BIPOC, not even at the back. Thinking that everyone who isn't white would meekly get on the black nationalism bus will prove catastrophic in the long term for Dems.
Zeldin, and Sliwa before him, have made enormous inroads into Chinese American communities. I live in Sunset Park and it was crazy to see how many Zeldin signs were plastered across businesses. Not just in Chinese storefronts, but even in Puerto Rican and Dominican owned stores too. Chinese language newspapers put news about the SHSAT on the front page, that's how important it is.
This all speaks to a larger realignment across the country. Affluent college-educated people are going Dem while working class whites, Latinos, and Asians are going Rep.
"...it is not uncommon for students to study for many years in anticipation of the specialized exam, known as SHSAT." I really wish anti-test-school media folks (I don't mean you) would lay off the fixation on Asian families and prep courses. It's a thinly-veiled dismissal of Asian kids as grinds and soulless test robots. And unless the SHSAT is markedly different in methodology from the SAT, these prep courses simply do not help very much. (And when they do -- a bit -- they tend to help those nearer the top of the ability band.)
I'm glad that you point out so many alternate routes to a fulfilling high school experience. I've taught kids at specialized high schools who (into their senior year) were still whinging about not getting into Brooklyn Tech. I wanted to say, "hey buddy, maybe appreciate that you're already in a better school environment than most." And this issue cuts both ways, and sometimes turns the racial assumptions back on themselves -- at CUNY, I will always get a couple Asian students in freshman comp with a burning motivation to write about how the SAT is inherently biased, gamed by prep courses, etc. My perception is that they are carrying some complicated baggage about not living up to the stereotype.
yea as an asian dem it’s a pretty disappointing trend, but i think the population growth thing is a bit of a red herring in the context of this article - around 50% of the asian immigrant population growth in the 2010s is from the subcontinent and deals with a somewhat different set of issues obv. my guess is that in ‘20s, immigration from the subcontinent is going to make up even more of that share as emigration from korea becomes less desirable + china does their weird covid zero thing. i don’t have the data to back this up, but i think you’re also seeing a more affluent sort of asian immigrant in nyc - iirc LIC saw the largest growth in asian population over the past 10 years? truly don’t how these people will vote.
i’d guess that a lot of the voting-age population growth from east asians is going to come from second-gen chinese coming of age, who i’d also guess are disproportionately college educated compared to the rest of the city.
dems have definitely created a problem with chinese living in chinatowns who probably are the most politically most important asians in nyc. ofc this is troubling from dems and tbqh very disappointing for a party of the center-left, but chinatown chinese =/= asians which is relevant if we’re making future projections imo.
You’re definitely right about the voting gap. The older immigrants will vote R, while their children go to college and vote D, as most college-educated young people do. I see this pattern among Vietnamese and Cuban Americans too.
I think 2023 will continue the trend we have seen so far with the city council races and redrawn assembly maps will make them (i.e., Queens) more vulnerable for 2024. I wonder if zeldin will take 2023 to campaign for nyc council candidates as he prepares for a 2024 senate run against Gilibrand or AOC (assuming a primary or retirement)? I could see a Desantis 2024 run would boost turnout even more.
Hypothetical for you, Ross. If the candidate for Queens DA that you and the NYT editorial board endorsed, "police abolitionist" Tiffany Caban won (having fallen a few hundred votes short), how would that have affected Tuesday's election? She made Alvin Bragg look like J. Edgar Hoover.
It's about time. The Democrats are morally and intellectually bankrupt and have contempt for the values and concerns of the middle and working class. On every issue crime, voter ID, immigration enforcement, fracking, religious freedom, gun ownership, school choice, forced unionization, and censorship they are on the side of the elites who have college degrees but little common sense and life experience outside the ghettoes of Hollywood, the media and the academy and have no use for the aspirations and concerns of anyone else. They deserve whatever they get.
Hey, Bill Colton ain't just some white guy - he's a law-and-order type who's succeeded as long as he has of because of hypervisibility among - and extremely loud advocacy for - the Chinese immigrants in the district. I'm skeptical a younger Asian progressive would've done better in the 49th!
(EDIT: No, wait, that sentence was about Peter Abbate in the 49th, not Colton in the 47th, d'oy. Colton *did* win in the 47th, precisely because he's bothered doing meaningful Asian outreach in a way Abbate hasn't.)
Dare I say it was always a fighting retreat with this group. I have a little experience with them in New Jersey both the Filipino group and Korean groups. They are at essence, so much more Republican. Free market. Bad experiences with governments. This is a generalization of course, and individuals will be different. I find they are comfortable Democrats where the party is winning and it is best to be , or where racism has tarnished the GOP brand. But where they can survive their culture is closer to Republicans, and no posturing can save that.
I have seen in one New Jersey town a successful mayor run as a Democrat, only to be told 'In the years when you are not running, can we switch back to GOP lawn signs?"
Zeldin was crazy, and I think his 2 attempts to link himself to crime should be more investigated. Turning the story to that would have been a more successful strategy for Hochul than anything else. Might have saved the House.
You have a fairly superficial understanding of the issue.
The Democrat's lost the Asians first on education. When you say this about Asians:
"End the SHSAT to stop whites from gaming the system fits easily into the left-leaning activist’s argument against the test."
you sound exactly like Samuel Gompers advocating for the Chinese Exclusion Act. When you accuse the right of not actually caring about Asians, are using them as a wedge, or argue that Asian's civil rights should be compromised for the "greater good", you sound exactly like Terrance Powderly and every 19th century racist justifying systematic anti-Asian racism and ethnic cleansing. The parents don't want their kids subjected to 19th century style systematic anti-Asian racism.
The criminal justice issues is another textbook case of the Democrat's engaging in 19th century style systematic anti-Asian racism.
I attended a magnet (Technical) HS in Detroit 55 years ago. 37 curriculae, including an honors curriculum with "honors" classes where non-honors curriculum kids could be put by invitation. It was racially balanced. SCAT/STEP, ACT, NMSQT scores you got going there were 1350 & up or selection scores over 120. Almost everybody. It was a culture thing, I guess. Races/Jews/Goys got along just fine. We even had our share of useless teachers - good preparation for university. A school where 2 of the Supremes and, later, Anita Baker attended. I would have never got where I got had I stuck with the neighborhood HS, despite my inherited smartee gene. You would think NYC would have schools like that for blacks, inbred whites, etc..

Aren't Jews and Asians among the most physically attacked groups in NYC?

Why would Asians vote for a party that attacks them in the streets and school boards? https://yuribezmenov.substack.com/p/how-to-stop-asian-hate

49th is Abbate, not Colton. Colton won, which was impressive.
Is it actually a "wave" if it results in a Democratic governor and Democratic super majorities in the legislature?
Well....yes...for the Dems, that is.
"Nothing to see here" will be the messaging, certainly.

Democrats lost where they didn't control the counting, were not in control of the SOS position, or didn't think they needed to cheat.
It is only natural that hard working family oriented people vote for the Republicans while the welfare lemmings stick to AOC and Brandon
